You always have two choices: your commitment versus your fear.
– Sammy Davis Jr.
Greetings yogis,
As we cross the threshold into a new year, I've purposefully taken more time to reflect on what has come rather than what lies ahead. For whatever reason, this feels more important this year before stampeding into 2026 with a fistful of to-do lists and grandiose goals. I've been thinking about sacred moments from my own journey, moments when something truly shifted inside me.
I remember one of these from about 15 years ago now, having just exploded a significant relationship, with a music project falling apart, and other pillars of my life crumbling. I remember making an unbreakable pact with myself to finally face some of the things that needed attention in my own heart and mind. In that moment, with tears and all, the vow felt holy in all the right ways.
For you, maybe it's the morning you wake up and realize you're tired of your own story and how you've been showing up, tired of the particular way you've been telling yourself what's possible, what's fair, what you deserve. Tired of waiting for the right conditions—the job, the relationship, the achievement—to finally feel at peace.
The shift I'm talking about isn't external and out there somewhere. It's not on January 1st, at the end of your to-do list, or waiting on some future version of your life. It happens here, in your own mind and heart, when you decide—really decide—to stop perpetuating your own suffering, and blaming the world for it. The commitment to your internal evolution and healing is the holiest moment.
Taking full responsibility for your life means you're finally ready. Ready to move toward yourself with compassion instead of criticism. Ready to forgive someone, or let something go, or invite someone back in. Ready to love yourself in the messy middle instead of waiting until you've earned it. Ready for the hard work of shifting stagnant patterns of the mind and acknowledging that joy is always a choice.
This is what yoga was always for. Not the stretchy hamstrings or the impressive poses, but mind-stretching—putting in the effort to change the fundamental operating system that determines how we experience our reality. The practice of seeing clearly, without the smudged-up lenses of old patterns and entrenched narratives.
So, as we move into this new year, try not to get too caught up in grand declarations, rigid resolutions, or lofty, externally validating achievements. And don’t put too much pressure on this one day. Stay close to your practice and your own heart. Stay humble, nimble, curious, and present. The holiest moment, the moment of committing to your internal evolution, is always waiting for you whenever you're ready to claim it.
You'll know when it's time; it will be undeniable.
May you all know peace.
