Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.
– Albert Einstein
Greetings yogis,
Thank God for my daily ambles around Muir Beach, filled with small miracles of hope as spring nears her arrival on March 20th. The brave succulents that desperately clung to rocky crags through the heavy rains are now confident, juicy and plump with sacred water and the promise of warmer weather ahead. Vivid blossoms adorn the trails and the green — the green — is so vibrant it stops me in my tracks. There's a vitality to the land that stirs the soul.
On the other side of the planet — from Iran to Ukraine — highly sophisticated missiles rip through hopes and dreams. The abstract justifications of violence swirl into our headlines from all sides of warring regimes but no one is — winning. I’m a simple man, I want peace for all. That IS winning.
How does one human heart hold the complexity of these lives we’ve been thrust into? Our brains haven’t yet caught up with the influx of information, horrific imagery and global newsfeeds. We aren’t wired to just sit back and take in this barrage through a glaring two-by-five-inch screen without some way of regulating our nervous systems.
I turn to little moments in nature and deeper breaths as often as possible, witnessing sprigs of courageous new life rise up from the dormant soil, unfurling their delicate green tendrils for their one, unique chance to experience and express life. I listen to the owl in the night perched in one of the Monterey Pines outside our home asking over and over, who — who is it we're all looking for?
We’re looking for ourselves in the midst of all of this, searching for meaning in the most dynamic and complex times humans have ever known, clamoring through vast fields of misinformation, distracted and weary as we look for our place in it all.
Our place is here, here in the heart and with each other. Our place is in community and collaboration, creativity and curiosity. Our place is in the practices that keep us close to the inner voice of truth and peace. Our place is in nature, and moving harmoniously with it. Our place is here in each breath.
May your practice always lead you back to it.
